Japan is a dream destination for travelers worldwide, known for its rich culture, incredible food, and breathtaking landscapes. But beyond the temples and sushi, it’s also a shopper’s paradise—especially for luxury fashion lovers.

One of Japan’s best-kept secrets? Pre-owned designer bags. Thanks to the country’s meticulous care for luxury goods and the favorable yen exchange rate, you can find mint-condition designer bags at significantly lower prices than retail. Think of it as a luxury fashion treasure hunt!

Before our trip, I found plenty of blog posts listing stores that sell second-hand luxury bags, but none of them provided actual price examples. I wanted to have a ballpark idea of pricing before shopping so I could recognize a good deal when I saw one.

So, here’s my firsthand shopping experience—with real prices.

(Follow the links in the shop names to view them on Google Maps, and check out the list of popular second-hand luxury resale stores with a custom map at the bottom of the post)

Not that I needed another bag (but let’s be real, do we ever need another bag?). I also wasn’t looking to spend entire days hopping from store to store—though, trust me, you easily could in Japan. That said, here’s what I was on the lookout for:

  1. Christian Louboutin tote bag – I love mine, but the straps are about to fall off. Unfortunately, we only found one CL tote, and it wasn’t the style I wanted.
  2. A cheap but good-condition Louis Vuitton Alma or Speedy – I wanted to get it custom painted.
  3. A Louis Vuitton Speedy Nano – For a friend.
  4. A well-priced Chanel Classic Jumbo bag – Because… Chanel.

Tokyo: Scouting Prices & Missed Opportunities

I didn’t end up buying anything in Tokyo—I was still “shopping around.” It was hard to know if I had found a great deal without seeing more options first.

We had a few stores on our list, but honestly, Tokyo is packed with second-hand luxury shops. We kept stumbling upon new stores just by walking around. I’ll list the popular second-hand chains at the end, but for now, here’s what we found:

I’ll start with the one that got away.

This was the first reasonably priced Chanel Jumbo I came across, and I didn’t buy it—thinking I might find something better. Spoiler alert: I didn’t.

It was a 20+ year-old vintage Chanel Jumbo for ¥543,637/~$3,600 USD. If I’m buying second-hand, I’d rather go full vintage, right?

I found this beauty in a tiny store on Cat Street: Viz Store Tokyo & 2nd.

Surprisingly, I didn’t see a ton of Louis Vuitton bags in Tokyo. However, Don Quijote Shinjuku Kabukicho (yes, Donki, the chaotic souvenir megastore) had a decent selection.

For example, this Louis Vuitton Speedy (not in the best condition) was ¥74,000 (~$490 USD).

If you’re not familiar with Don Quijote, it’s a must-visit for souvenir shopping. You can find everything from makeup and candy to electronics—and, apparently, used designer goods. But be warned: the stores are crowded and crammed with stuff. I recommend going early in the morning like we did (thanks, jet lag!).

This is the store where I found some good prices on Chanel:

Daikokuya Shinjuku 2 Bankan

Osaka: Where I Did My Shopping

I ended up buying all my bags in Osaka. Why? Because Osaka is pre-owned shopping heaven.

There are hundreds (yes, hundreds) of second-hand luxury shops, especially around Shinsaibashi-Suji, one of the most famous shopping streets in Japan. You could easily spend an entire day just browsing.

I’ve found these Louis Vuitton Speedy Nano bags for my friend so she can compare condition and pricing:

Great condition Nano for ¥74,800 or about $500 at Daikokuya Shinsaibshi.

Good condition for ¥69,800/~$465 or not great condition for ¥39,800/~$265 at RiZ.

I bought this Louis Vuitton Alma in very good condition for ¥69,900/~$465 at 2nd Street Shinsaibashi.

My plan is to send it to be custom painted, but I am yet to decide on the design and select an artist.

Since I didn’t find a Louboutin tote, I figured… might as well get a Louis Vuitton tote instead, right?

I saw these Louis Vuitton Grand Sac Eclipse bags at 2nd Street, the same place I bought Alma, for ¥228,000 (~$1,533 USD) and ¥250,000 (~$1,650 USD)..

But then I found one for $1,425 at Amona. The bag looked brand new, but what I didn’t realize (until I got home) was that it had a smell. Since it was a tax-free purchase, I wasn’t allowed to open the shopping bag until we cleared customs in Japan. By the time I got home, I realized the previous owner was likely a smoker.

Good news: After a few months of daily use, the smell is completely gone. So, lesson learned—check for odors before buying!

And finally, the last bag I bought was Louis Vuitton black Epi Speedy 30.

I didn’t even take a picture in-store because I wasn’t planning on buying this bag—it just happened.

I was taking pictures of other bags I was considering, planning to return later. Then I saw this Speedy in like-new condition for  ~$410 at Brand Off.

A quick search on The RealReal showed this bag sells for almost double the price in the U.S., so… I bought it on the spot.

Popular Pre-Owned Luxury Stores in Japan

If you’re planning your own second-hand shopping adventure, these chain stores are among the most well-known:

  • Komehyo
  • Brand Off
  • 2nd Street
  • RAGTAG
  • Daikokuya
  • Okura
  • Brand Gallery
  • Amore

There are many independent shops as well, but these chains have multiple locations and a solid reputation.

I marked the stores we visited, along with others I know, on these maps (click on the image to open the map). I’m sure there are plenty more out there!

Osaka

Final Thoughts

I hope this post gives you a realistic look at pre-owned designer bag shopping in Japan—with actual prices—so you can decide if it’s worth adding to your itinerary.

Japan has an insane selection of luxury second-hand goods, and if you do your research, you can walk away with some incredible deals. Just remember: if you see something you love, don’t assume you’ll find it later! (Still thinking about that Chanel Jumbo… sigh.)

Happy shopping!
